The University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia
Penn's Department of Radiology has a reputation for providing exceptional educational opportunities. The school is renowned for a wide variety of factors including their highly-acclaimed faculty. Penn's radiology school is a part of Penn Medicine and consists of two main Divisions. The first Division is focused on traditional academic and clinical education and is based at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center. The other Division is based at Pennsylvania Hospital, Phoenixville Hospital, Chester County Hospital, and four outpatient imaging centers. This Division is focused on Community Radiology. Penn Radiology is among the top schools in the nation for the funding it receives from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for radiology research. Furthermore, students can also study to become radiologic technologists which is an entry-level position in the field of radiology. Students who complete the RT program at Penn will be well prepared to become certified radiologic technologists after the two year program.
The University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh
The Department of Radiology at the University of Pittsburgh is one of the largest in the world. The radiologists in the Department are each dedicated to one of eight subspecialties. This offers patients and students the opportunity to receive the specialized care they need and to gain practical experience from leaders in their respective areas of focus. Furthermore, the Department makes teaching a priority and has been doing so since it was founded in 1956 with three full-time radiologists. There are now more than 200 faculty members in the Department who conduct research, offer patient care and train aspiring radiologists at more than 30 locations in the Pittsburgh area. A Bachelor's Degree in the Radiological Science program offers classroom lecture combined with practical and hands-on interaction with patients under close supervision at the Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia
Drexel University College of Medicine has more than 1,000 medical students and is housed in a suburban area of Philadelphia. The University offers a radiology residence program and provides experience and training in general diagnostic radiology as well as opportunities to focus on subspecialties. The program is centered at Hahnemann University Hospital. The University and its affiliates have been leaders in medical education for over 150 years and its faculty in the Department of Radiologic Sciences are all esteemed practitioners in their respective areas of focus from oncology to pediatrics. For students interested in entry level positions, Drexel offers an Associate's Degree in radiologic technology. The 21 month program is offered through the Radiologic Technology Department of the College of Nursing and Health Professions. Penn State University, Hershey Campus and others
The Penn State College of Medicine's Radiology Department based at the Hershey Campus provides cutting edge resources for the study of radiology. The Department has "over 370 employees including 61 faculty and 30 Radiology residents. An all digital department, we provide immediate image availability at the point of patient care at all locations within the network." In addition to the large facility at the main hospital in Hershey, the network also includes imaging sites throughout the campus and in Harrisburg and Camp Hill. Several other Penn State campuses, there are more than 20, offer entry level Associates Degrees in radiologic technologies. Penn State New Kensington is one such example. Penn State Schuylkill offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Radiologic Science.
Gannon University, Erie
The Radiologic Sciences Program at Gannon University offers students the opportunity to work with the most advanced radiologic technology while also providing the opportunity to work directly with patients. Radiographers who finish the 24 month program will be earn an Associate Degree and be poised to work in entry level professional positions after passing the national examination for certification in Radiography by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Passing this test is required for anyone who wants to work in the field of radiology. The program consists of classroom lecture, laboratory learning and clinical education with an emphasis on high-quality patient care. Students work in actual imagining facilities throughout the northwestern section of the state under close supervision of faculty and staff.
