Resources for Existing Radiology Workers

Whether you are a limited scope x-ray tech, or a seasoned Radiologic Technologist, the field of medical imaging offers a variety of avenues to expand your skill set, prepare you for a promotion, salary increases, and become more valuable to your employer.  We’ve put together a list of resources and programs on this site to help you learn about and find programs for you, the growing professional.

From Technician to Technologist - Becoming an RT

If you have been working in a limited scope capacity as a technician, but want to work towards becoming a certified Rad Tech, there are many opportunities for you to accomplish your goal.  Below are some resources to help you get things started.

About Certification

Perhaps you have been working as a an x-ray technician and have found your job rewarding, but want to take the next step and become certified and registered through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). If you received on the job training, you may not be eligible to sit for the exam. While it sometimes can feel like taking a step backwards, it can be worth it to augment your hands on experience with a radiology program that is accredited through the Joint Review Committee on Education for Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Upon completion you will be eligible to take the exam administered through the ARRT and attain an RT designation.

Weighing Online vs Campus Based School Options

For working professionals, completing your education online is a popular option. This site offers online programs that will make you eligible to sit for the ARRT exam; however, there are some prerequisites that must be met. In addition, you can view radiology programs in your state and request information about their program details. Often, employers have a vested interest in getting your certified, so you may want to get flexibility of schedule options from the school and discuss a plan with your employer to help you complete your education. Some schools offer classes at night and weekends as well as some hybrid programs with certain courses available online. You may also qualify for online bachelors degree programs if you have had previous college credits and meet their qualifications. Be sure to check out online radiology programs featured on this site.

Benefits of Becoming a Certified Radiologic Technologist

When you are a licensed and certified Radiologic Technologist registered with the ARRT, you are telling prospective employers that you have received a level of education that is commensurate with national standards. When you combine prior clinical experience with this designation, you have now become a much more desirable candidate in the eyes of employers. According to salary data from the American Medical Association and indeed.com, certified Rad Tech's make, on average, about $15,000 more per year than their non-certified technician counterparts. Further, being a certified Rad Tech sets the stage for endless possibilities of growth and exploration in the world of medical imaging sciences. Perhaps you want to become a Radiologist Assistant, Mammographer, or CT Tech; you've now laid the foundation for pursuing these goals.

What a Bachelors Degree in Radiology Can Do For You

Have you been a working professional as a Rad Tech, but want to take the next step? Earning a bachelors degree can be beneficial for those seeking supervisory positions, training and teaching roles, or who want to purse higher level positions such as Radiologist Assistant. It can also be a good way to enter the profession if you already have an associates degree or college credits, you may qualify for online or campus based bachelors programs.

About Online Radiology Bachelors Degrees

Online radiology programs allow you to complete regular course work online and then allow you to complete the clinical components at a location near you where a seasoned professional is assigned to supervise you and sign off on a set of skills and competencies. The program details of each are slightly different, so it is important to learn about your options and choose a program that is aligned with your career goals.

Expanding your Skill Set Through Certificate Programs

Many schools now offer certificate programs for those interested in expanding their skills or for those who want to pursue a specialization such as Computed Tomography, Mammography, or Cardiovascular Technology. After having worked as a general radiographer, it is natural to develop interest in a particular sub specialty. If you want to put yourself in line for the next available position, obtaining the training and having a certificate on your resume is sure to help.

Do You Have What it Takes to Become a Radiologist Assistant?

The role of Radiologist Assistant is one of the highest level positions you can attain short of being an actual Radiologist M.D. With the current crisis involving the shortage of Radiologist M.D.'s the role of Radiologist Assistant has been formed and has its own educational and certification standards set by the ARRT. These roles are highly coveted with salaries over 100,000 annually and a position that works in tandem with physicians, it is gaining popularity and prominence. You can learn more about how to become a Radiologist Assistant on this site and find schools offering Radiologist Assistant Programs.
