How To Become a Radiology Technologist in Kentucky

Becoming a radiology worker in Kentucky begins with a solid educational foundation. A radiology degree program may help prepare you to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam. Here are the basic steps required to become a radiology technologist in Kentucky:

  1. Earn a high school diploma. As with most jobs in health care, a high school education is the first step to finding entry-level employment. Taking classes in math and science, such as anatomy, biology, chemistry, physiology, and physics, may help according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  2. Earn an associate degree. Most entry-level radiologic technologists possess at least an Associate of Applied Science degree in the field. Before enrolling in one of these programs, students should make sure it has received accreditation from the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).
  3. Get licensed or certified in the state of Kentucky. Students can find more information about state-specific licensing requirements on the Kentucky state website. To learn more about the certification process, contact the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

In addition to completing a radiology program, you may need to get licensed through the state of Kentucky’s radiation safety department. In Kentucky, this licensing authority is within the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. To become a licensed radiology professional in Kentucky, you will need to meet their prerequisites which include completing an accredited radiology program, and holding a valid certificate from the ARRT or one of the other certification boards such as the ARDMS for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or the NMTCB for Nuclear Medicine Technologists.

Kentucky also allows you to obtain a temporary license to practice if you are waiting to take the ARRT exam and have already completed the required radiology curriculum. The temporary license will allow you to get a job and practice while you await the final steps in your certification. A temporary radiology license will cost you $50 and will be good for one year, while the permanent licensing costs $60.
